COLLIDE/CREATE is a colalbortion between 3 areas of the School of Communication, Media and the Arts here at Sacred Heart University and 3 composers. The impetus behind this collaboration was a rejuvenation of a class called Democratic Technologies which was first offered in the year 2000. “I wanted to get back to the experimental roots of the course. And I loved collaborating on big projects across disciplines in my academic career. I like unexpected results!”, said professor Gregory Golda from the Communications school. Golda approached Keith Johnston about adding music to the project and the wheels started turning. Johnston said, “This project was originally conceived using existing music in the repertoire.
However, one of the important roles a university fills in society is in the creation and exploration of the new. So I approached 3 composers, each with a different compositional style and faith tradition, with the idea of creating a work based on the Buddhist concept of the “4 Immeasureables: Loving Kindness, Joy, Compassion, Equinimity”. In today’s workshop performance we’re reminded that music is truly a universal language, with the ability to cut across divides. A truly non-verbal project, today’s workshop performance encourages us to experience life on a deeper, more personal, musical level.”
Golda and Johnston approached choreographer and instructor Kari Williams. She was immediately intrigued and jumped on board. She said, “I have always been intrigued by the process of interdisciplinary art creation. Most of the work for this project will emerge from an informed, intentional, yet improvisational place. Dance reflecting life in the present moment in a way that cannot be conveyed through verbal dialogue along – thereby encouraging my students to be moved like thinking artists. I am excited to see how it unfolds when all of the artists involved are communicating in the moment through their own respective mediums.”
Far from a finished product, what the audience will see tonight is the opening layer of a project being built before their eyes. The recording of tonight’s performance will be used as the floor plan to build more media works and continue the collaborations.
